We are working with four local partnerships through the #NetworkedData Lab in England and Wales, and helping them develop local datasets to answer these questions. Lots more research to come – so watch this space and explore our chart in more detail. [7/n]

What could be achieved with better data? 1⃣ We could find out how many carers are receiving indirect support (when support goes to the relative/cared-for) 2⃣ Councils could identify their most vulnerable carers, better understand their needs & deliver the right support. [6/n]

What are the implications? Carers need access to a wide range of support options, which councils have a duty to provide. However, fewer than 1 in 10 are reaching out for help. Of those who do, only 1 in 4 are receiving direct support (usually direct payments for services). [5/n]

⬆️Carers are a diverse group & have diverse needs. 4 out of 10 working age carers say it prevents them from working – they need help to stay in work. Older carers are more likely to be helping someone with complex needs (e.g. dementia) as well as managing their own health. [4/n]

But the Census doesn’t say much about care relationships so we turned to @usociety. We found that most carers are women and 2/3 are over 50 yrs old. Most carers under 70 are caring for a parent (usually outside the household) & most older carers are caring for a partner. [3/n]

First, how many carers are there? The 2021 Census reported 5 million (~10% of pop). This was fewer people than in 2011 and surprised us – but remember that the Census was held during a lockdown that prevented household mixing. Other surveys suggest 16-20% are carers. [2/n]

📢Today we published our latest chart on #carers. Did you know that 2/3rds of people will provide unpaid care? This looks at how many people are carers, how it impacts their lives and how many are getting the support they are entitled to (a 🧵). https://t.co/ftv8Ui1W3R [1/n]

Shamima Begum has lost an appeal against the decision to remove her British citizenship. The implications of this is HUGE for UK citizens i.e. if you are a British citizen, who has any links of foreign descent through your parents/grandparents, your citizenship is now conditional
BREAKING: Shamima Begum will not be allowed to return to the UK, the Special Immigration Appeals Commission has ruled. The court decided to dismiss the 23-year-old's appeal on all grounds https://t.co/ZwnTJdIQpb 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube
