Sea surface temperature isn't a great predictor for right whales, and it wouldn't have predicted the major changes that started ~12 years ago that led to the unusual mortality event. You need things like bottom temperature and prey abundance. E.g.

It works pretty well for some species, and it's a good plug for ecological forecasting. But take it with a grain of salt when they say, "it’s easy to replicate anywhere else," and then go right to talking about North Atlantic right whales.
