If I could fight anyone in history I'd fight my stupid ass grandpa who left the Amalfi Coast to give us a better life in Staten Island NY. What an idiot
Holy smokes - the BIGGEST thing that’s ever happened! I’ve made the shelves of Barnes & Noble! Will my dad stop telling me to take the sanitation union test now??
I fly to LA in 17 days to write the script for Play The Devil. And each day I hammer out the first draft I get angrier at my parents for not letting me go to film school. If u have kids remember - theyre going to become who they are supposed to be with or without you.
When I was starting off I used to reach out to bigger authors - mainly alt lit darlings - for advice & the responses were usually mean & now that people do it to me I try & remember that all everyone needs is encouragement. So be nice. It's really easy to be nice
1. I pulled a manuscript from a publisher ystrdy, 1st time I've ever done that. Our relationship started off great but he started belittling my taste in lit, who I spent my time with, what bands I liked, and by then end I was getting dozens of texts a day attacking my character,
Whoa!! I heard Play The Devil was in the front window of Barnes & Noble but I had to see it to believe it! We stopped on the way home from Pittsburgh. Mind blown.
A cool thing abt living in BK is people have these “salon” open mic things i their livings rooms. Tonight’s show was in Bedstuy. Tried out some new poems. Life was good for an hr
I did a reading tonight in Bushwick and there was a mirror right across from the stage and for the first time I saw myself, and I realized I wasnt very good or interesting. So I think I’m done, but the host took a good pic, and that’s prob all that matters anyway
Since Jan 1st Ive read in 25 cities, in front of 30 people nodding off on oxys, rap battles in Charlotte, a creperie in Houston, metal heads in Philly, and finally to a room full of professors in Chicago! Every person I’ve met has been amazing. Thank you for this amazing ride!
if places like
@hobartpulp
disappeared we'd be so screwed. there are so few places left you can send a 4k word essay - with NO READING FEE - and have a great editor work it up before it's published. the peoples' champs, no doubt
Whoa this is awesome, first Pushcart mom in years! Thanks at
@PAPS_Lit_Mag
! Read "A Life" in the mental health issue. Join me on my road off the cliff
I dunno if I appreciated it enough at the time but this could’ve been the high water mark of my writing career - I won two separate writing awards from
@CityCollegeNY
- 1 in fiction and 1 in non fiction, the first person in over 100 years to do so. Thanks CCNY!!
Chloe is a Rhodesian Ridgeback i met when I was a doorman who suffers from a rare thyroid disorder. She was supposed to live 3 years. Today I went to her 10th birthday party!!
Want back to my hometown pizza joint and I asked the owner how buisness was and he said - "bad, the kids dont come here after school to smoke and fight in the parking lot anymore, they all go home now and look at their phones. They dont buy pizza or go outside." The good ol days
I wrote Bill Watterson a letter in 1993 telling him I wanted to be a writer and that dude is such a baller he almost immediately wrote me back.

If you read Baby ‘97 you’d know how hilarious it is that I was a featured reader at Barnes $ Noble yesterday. But I’m not 17 now and Barnes $ Noble is helping small authors these days, so … I guess this is growing up
My poem “My Bluest Valentine” was in the final issue of
@OutcastPress
’s lit rag! Bone House & Camp Winapooka (my poetry books) are $7 from the link in my bio!<3
Flat tire on a dirt road not 1 car ever drove down. No water. 110 degrees. FLAT donut. After 4 hrs we accepted that we were going to die. Just as the sun started to set a Mennonite drove up with an air compressor, filled up the donut and brought us back to the Mennonite compound!
It's crazy that high school was about as good as it gets bc I was unpopular, never got laid, had awful friends and a really mean dad and the only thing that's changed is now I have to make money and (suprise) I'm terrible at that too. At least i have good hair. Score.
this app gets dogged on a lot but i find twitter to generally have the nicest and most supportive users of any social. or maybe the people i've met on here are all just exceptional ballers 🥂
Thought you'd all like to know those anchovies I caught and salted during the pandemic well I tried them yesterday and they were disgusting and somehow still wet, I got two down before i started gagging. Never try this
3. Publishing is really almost always horrible but this was like emotionally draining too. I dunno the point of this, I guess you'll have to deal with me promoting my old books for awhile longer. Be nice to your editors, be nice to your publishers, be nice to ur artists. <3
My dad who hates everything: Have you ever heard of Usher? he's a great roller skater, that was the best halftime show in years, see what you can do if you work hard?
Before I quit writing poetry I had this one last poem published by The Univeristy of Missouri’s journal Cape Rock, one of the country’s oldest lit mags. Finally got my cont. copy and she’s a beaut
Three new poems published today by the great
@press_roi
. These are different, they reflect this time in my life where I’m afraid of everything, the dice seem more loaded, and whatever was rolling in my favor is just turning up jokers. Read em here —>

2. politics, and looks. He kept holding the legacy of the press over my head and why I needed them. I'm never confrontational so I took it, but it eventually had me smoking cigs again so ystrdy my gf was like you have to be done with this person they're insane. So I did.
It's so surreal that we're only alive for 100 years, we share this time with a finite amount of people, we only ever know a few hundred of them, 100 years after we're dead we're all totally forgotten AND YET we're all such fucking assholes and terrible to each other
Like almost a decade ago a really unpolished half baked version of Play The Devil was put out by a now defunct press. I've gotten most back but I've always wondered where the 10 or so copies I couldn't find ended up. Well today one was spotted in Northern Minnesota. Crazy!
i worked under piers in -4 degrees smashing concrete and all those guys wanted to write a book, and many of the writers i know say they want to "do something real" like manual labor, and i proudly say to them - it's all pointless and eventually everything hurts
Whoa my books in another library!! I wish it was checked out but its unreal to see this! Thanks Andrew! Play The Devil is $9 from the link in bio or your local bookstore and FREE at the library!!
During the 4+ years of writing this novel I NEVER imagined anyone other than a few people at my readings would read/buy it. I don’t know if 1900 is a lot but to me it’s like an unimaginable # and I’m so blown away and grateful to every one of you.Thanks Bone Machine (
@JerryOvad
)
I spent my weekend in Gray, Maine milking goats. The milk smelled like goat ass but the cheese they make on this farm is worth quitting writing and going to goat school. And check out the cobwebs on the roof of the barn!!
really want to thank
@xraylitmag
for being one of the few and the brave to still publish long fiction (and not charge a reading fee). "Can't Die In Portland, Maine" probably wouldn't have found a home without them.
Heres a life highlight. Its 1999 and 14 y/o Scott has gotten a ride to Asbury Park with some cool ass seniors to sleep under the boardwalk and spend 12 hours hunting for
@GreenDay
. And then we found them!!
