Across the UK, disabled people are facing rising costs and changes to benefits. Many are being pushed into poverty. Nada, a single mum and social worker, was suddenly struck by chronic pain. This forced her to leave her job and face financial hardship.

Government data on PIP finds that only about half of applications actually lead to an award. And fraud is effectively zero. So it's unlikely that advice on social media is leading people to successfully 'game' the system. How's that for a fact check?

It can be difficult to know how to access support when you need it. And many disabled people give up. Many are reduced to tears, left broken, and have nowhere else to turn. PIP exists because life costs more if you are disabled.

But the benefits system is complex and hard to understand. And the idea to decide how disabled people are supported based on outdated thinking and flawed assumptions would be a recipe for disaster.

Today, Kemi Badenoch has said that people are "gaming" the benefits system. She pointed to 'sickfluencers' as an example. If you don't know, this refers to disabled people on social media that share stories and give advice and support around benefits. https://t.co/8xTBVBL6dM

The Tory leader said the system was not designed to handle ‘the age of diagnosis which we now live in’.

With 16 million disabled people in the UK, it’s time to make disability equality a priority. Disabled talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t.

Cuts to the health element of Universal Credit are still in the pipeline, and that will make life even harder for disabled people. The government must work with disabled people to create an equal future.

Today’s budget hasn’t put disabled people’s needs front and centre. Life costs more if you are disabled. Transport, energy, and mobility equipment all come with a hefty price tag.

It’s clear that we need better support in place, fair pay, and transparent pay gap reporting. Disabled people who can and want to work should be able to. As well as stay in work, and progress in their careers.

To make things worse, disabled people are nearly twice as likely to fall out of work compared to non-disabled people. Inflexible working patterns, negative attitudes from employers, and the #DisabilityPayGap are holding disabled people back.

Once again, the odds are stacked against disabled people at work. It’s unacceptable, but even more infuriating when you consider that the average disabled household faces £1,095 each month in extra costs. Yet fair pay and opportunities are out of reach for many.
