They might have compassion burnout. They probably loved kids when they started, but the conditions of the job made them too unhappy to care. They are not the problem. The job conditions are.

Should children learn high-level math? When I finished high school I didn't know you couldn't divide by 0. I slept through math because it was irrelevant. After a few years I fell in love with physics and got my PhD in computational neuroscience. I learned math because I cared.
