THOMAS SALTER SCIENCE KITS: A staple for many a science-obsessed kid in the Scarred For Life era. Chock full of toxic powders, chemicals, glass test tubes, a methylated spirit burner, and lots more. "Harmful if misused," you say?

This is devastating. I went to art college with Dave Taylor in 1989-90. Even then, he was leagues ahead of the rest of the class. He was a regular at Forbidden Planet, my old workplace, for years. One of the loveliest people ever, and a ridiculously talented artist. RIP, mate.

COSMIC ZOOM (1968): Mind-blowing animation directed by Eva Szasz for the National Film Board of Canada. A zoom out to the edge of the universe, and a zoom in to an atomic level: it'll make you feel insignificant and uniquely special all at the same time.

The Unborn is a brilliant hour of peak BBC2 weirdness. And it has a rubber demon that makes the snake from Dr Who's Kinda look like Jurassic Park. What are you waiting for?.

BBC2 PLAYHOUSE - THE UNBORN (1980): Rosemary's Baby meets The Omen III, with a huge dollop of British weirdness, in Philip (Gangsters, Doctor Who) Martin's play about a physicist who has vivid dreams about his unborn son: a Hitler-like fascist who starts World War III.

RING OF BRIGHT WATER (1969): Charming family film about one man's friendship with his cute little otter, Mij. Featuring the stars of Born Free, it's innocuous enough, until this scene, which comes like a bolt from the blue.

GREEN CROSS CODE: SPLINK (1976) The great Jon Pertwee guides kids (including a young Todd Carty) across the road using the famously complex mnemonic, which only served to confuse kids and was unceremoniously scrapped. The Enigma Code was easier to crack.

I don't know what was in the water in 1977, but body horror for kids was the order of the day! @2000AD's The Visible Man, Cyborg's arch enemy Muton, and Pulsar the Ultimate Man of Adventure all wandered around with their internal organs on show. Long live the new flesh!
