Milwaukee's Soldiers Home District is in jeopardy and needs urgent action to survive.

Built in 1894 in Colonial Revival style, the Social Hall was a recreational hub for veterans, offering card games, billiards, a bowling alley and a ballroom. The Hall underwent further updates in 2004-05 for VA office space. Some original features still remain.

The Soldiers Home Chapel is a multi-denominational church built in 1889. It was paid for with “Post Funds”, which included profits from the operation of the Home Store, beer sales, the sales of products made or grown at the branch, gifts, bequests, and unpaid pensions of members.

In 1932, this building, the Hospital Annex, was built. It is one of the earliest buildings constructed by the Veterans Administration and was used to accommodate long term patients.

In 1887, the Secretary and Surgeons' Quarters were built to house Soldiers Home doctors. It was constructed as part of an effort to create a village setting where residents, patients and caregivers all lived and worked together.

Wadsworth Library, completed in 1891, gave all members of Soldiers Home free access to a reading room furnished with 185 of the leading magazines and newspapers of the time. By 1924, the library boasted 12,000 volumes of literature. Here are the past and present pictures!
