From a purely US-centric view, what Ukraine is doing is degrading the military capacity of a geopolitical rival of the US for a generation or more.
The cost to us is a fraction of our defense budget.
But MAGA folk want Russia to be stronger compared to the US, you see.

Our defense budget is larger than all of the other major powers combined. And Russia's capabilities were clearly overrated, not to mention we didn't need to turn a "rival" into an outright enemy. This proxy war is completely unnecessary, and got a lot of people killed.

The U.S. has struggled with proxies of allies of power rivals for ages. "Maybe we'll make a deal with the Taliban, maybe we'll align with Iran and let it do whatever, we better not say mean things about China and we should give Russia reset buttons". And they want to whiff this?

The only people who are getting practice are the ones who are practicing avoiding combat. The rest are getting slaughtered. They cannot make anything but the most basic equipment. And they are in demographic freefall, hence the kidnapping of Ukrainian children.

This war is pushing Russia closer to China, a far more powerful potential rival. Even Henry Kissinger knows that you don't want to fight Russia and China simultaneously. And we even managed to push Iran into the anti-US coalition too.
