<fugitive Jefferson Davis taken into custody>
“Oh, now we’re arresting the former head of the main opposition to the Lincoln regime? Really? Well, I guess that’s what the Yanks call free speech now. Pretty clear sign certain property rights are going to be taken away.”

He could’ve been arrested when he resigned the Senate after Mississippi seceded. He remained in Washington for days after he resigned, perhaps preferring a court battle. But we decided to settle the question of secession on a battle field instead of a court. I wonder why?

I’ve been arguing for years that the interesting circumstances of Jefferson Davis’ arrest should be turned into an informal national holiday, for partying and mockery of Confederate machismo. It would function as a secular version of Purim.
