This is another one of those situations where mispronunciation and misspelling are happening more and more, to the point of acceptability. So you can choose whether you want to follow my advice. But I'll stick to itβfor now, anyway. #writingcommunity

Today on LinkedIn, someone shared a photo of something that said "a very special daughter and partner." The word "her" before "partner" would have done a world of good.

I think this pair of confusables is particularly cruel. (Yes, this lesson is in the book: Unflubbify Your Writing: Bite-Sized Lessons to Improve Your Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar.)

Yes, "should've," "would've," "could've," and "must've" are all kosher contractions. (Though the longer I look at them, the weirder they seem.) "Shoulda," "woulda," and "coulda" all appear in @MerriamWebster as "pronunciation spellings." Stillβno "of" involved. #writingcommunity

I felt compunction yesterday when I beat a yellow jacket to death with my shoe. But that critter was too close for comfort, and I had been stung, unprovoked, by two of its brethren just a few days ago. I opted for a figurative sting over a literal one.

You can be a confident, lifelong English speaker and still occasionally find yourself wondering, "Wait. Is that how you say it?" Compound possession can have that effect. PS: This lesson is in the book ( https://t.co/BVBW0MgD4o).

My nervousness about using these two words remains at a high level.

You don't want baited breath.* πͺ± *Spell-check has no problem with the sentence above. Never forget that electronic writing assistants thrive on your humiliation. (And no, spell-check did not interpret the context. It also permits "I'm waiting with baited breath.") #writing

Last week, my friend (and her dog) saw one of these reaaaally close up in Alaska. She captured great video on her phone, and the bear was absolutely brown.

This morning I received an exasperating text. Siri politely read it to me. I reacted by exclaiming, "Are you f*cking KIDDING me?" Siri thought I was dictating a response. She read my utterance back to me and inquired, "Ready to send it?" π "No," I replied with *great* care.
