Tropical Wonders celebrates the variety and interconnectedness of all living organisms on our planet. By bringing guests closer to a variety of underrepresented (and misunderstood) animals, we hope to inspire an appreciation for the interdependence of humans, animals, and plants.

In the attached Thomas & Nancy Crawford Aviary, the space is open and features added seating, an improved water feature, and additional tropical plants.

Meet Nugget the Chilean flamingo! 👋🦩. Nugget was born with an impaired foot that required amputation. After a successful procedure, our Animal Care & Health team designed and hand-sewed a custom “shoe” for Nugget to maintain her quality of life.

Happy birthday to you, Raj! 🥳🎂3️⃣. Raj the red panda celebrated his 3rd birthday today at the Zoo! He and Ruby the red panda had a blast opening presents full of tasty omnivore biscuits scattered around their habitat by Keepers Meghan and Nakita.

The California condor is as hungry as it is industrious! 😋⚒️. California condors have sharp, strong, curved beaks that they use to tear flesh from carcasses. Their utilitarian beaks also help them clear tree branches to roost in and bump rocks out of their cave nesting sites.

Bald eagles nearly went extinct due to DDT poisoning in 1963 when their numbers dropped below 500 individuals remaining. Thanks to conservation efforts, they’ve returned to abundance and are now listed as a species of “Least Concern” by the IUCN.

They now serve as ambassadors for their species and are living proof of the impact of conservation work.

According to US law, releasable bald eagles are not permitted to live in zoos. Unfortunately, Avalon and Amelia both came to the Santa Barbara Zoo after sustaining wing injuries that left them unable to survive in the wild.

Little critter, little blep! #TongueOutTuesday 👅. Slender-tailed meerkats average about 20 inches in length from head to tail. Their tails make up just under half of their total length, measuring approximately 7 to 10 inches in length. 📸: Keeper Ariel

Red pandas are crepuscular and are most active during the twilight hours of the morning and afternoon. They’re typically awake for just under half of the day and spend most of their daylight hours conserving energy by resting in the branches of trees.
