A very happy second birthday to the fifth incarnation of Johnson’s Willow, which was planted in a ceremony on 2 November 2021. As the images show, the tree has made substantial growth in its first two years beside Stowe Pool – long may it continue to do so!

With funds from the JS et al, SJ’s Birthplace has acquired an important letter (left) written by SJ to Sophia Thrale (right) on 24 July 1783 (when she was 12). The letter is charming, and also shows SJ’s interest in maths, and his belief it should form part of female education.

This is such great news, the team at @SamuelJohnsonBM and @lichfield_cc acted quickly and pulled together private donors and grants in almost no time to be able to secure this piece of our history and make sure it stays in the UK and in public ownership. https://t.co/AME5k843Jy

#OTD 288 years ago Johnson and Tetty got married at St Werburgh's Church in Derby. The two were married for 17 years until Tetty's death in March 1752. Johnson never remarried and wrote a sermon on the anniversary of her death every year. Images courtesy of @SamuelJohnsonBM

The Francis Barber plaque has been mounted onto the wall of Cruck House on Stowe Street; go and have a look . We have really enjoyed working with many city partners & Francis Barber’s family on this project and it is lovely to see Frank recognised &remembered. #francisbarber
