I appeared today on @Channel4News today speaking about the new Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy. A strategy without survivors at its heart will not protect women. #domesticabuseawareness

Itās easy to identify the visible signs of domestic violence, if we saw someone with a black eye or split lip, we would almost immediately start a conversation. But we donāt know how to start a conversation about coercive control because we donāt know the early warning signs.

Coercive control changes the behaviour of the person experiencing it almost instantly. People wonāt recognise that this is because of the perpetrator and their tactics but will automatically see the person experiencing the abuse as the problem. #CoerciveControl

Far too many men, women and young people are experiencing coercive control but in the midst of it they donāt know. Bystanders, friends, family and colleagues donāt know what the early warning signs are or how to start conversations around coercive control. We need to do more.

Domestic abuse doesnāt start with physical violence, yet we wait until someone has physical injuries before concluding they are a victim of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is about power and control, which is what coercive control is. #CoerciveControl #Awareness

Even though itās been a crime for a decade, it is still misunderstood and minimised with far too many professionals not receiving adequate coercive control awareness training. When are we going to have a conversation about that? #CoerciveControl

Stating domestic abuse is a national emergency is one very small step forward. When are we actually going to see earlier prevention work rather than waiting to put people in control rooms and specialists in various teams? #CoerciveControl #DomesticAbuse

Prevent violence before it happens. Catch abusers, sex offenders and rapists before they reoffend. Support victims and ensure justice is served. This is how we are delivering the largest crackdown on violence against women and girls in British history.

Violence against women and girls is a national emergency. This Labour Government will deploy the full power of the state to halve it.

Good to see elements of the VAWG strategy targeting perps start to emerge. I've said many times this strategy must be a turning point in our approach to tackling DA, centred around prevention and backed by major funding including for services. Proof will be in the full detail.

Domestic abuse doesnāt start with physical violence, it starts with power and control, which is what coercive control is. We need to identify coercive control sooner rather than later. A personās Appearance, Behaviour & Conversation will change instantly in an abusive situation.

We canāt grow alone and we canāt make changes on our own either. During my sessions I include other specialist services too because you never know who is in your audience listening and needing that gentle guidance. ā¦@paullavellefounā©

Those experiencing domestic abuse donāt want judgement, victim blaming or lack of understanding they want the abuse to stop. They want to be understood, heard, believed and supported. #DomesticAbuse

For many years I used this platform to raise awareness of domestic abuse by sharing my lived experience. I have now set up my own business delivering training to practitioners and professionals to enhance their understanding of coercive control and its impact.
