I’m going to assume this person is joking, but unfortunately, a lot of people do actually think that at least some of the great philosophers are stupid. If you find yourself thinking this, consider that you may be misunderstanding them (or at least that you’re missing context).

While all philosophers are obviously evil, Aristotle was both exceptionally evil and exceptionally stupid even by the standard of a philosopher.

Really nice article from Florence on Fichte! I happen to disagree with the characterization of Kant, but go have a read!. It’s a great piece! 😊.

her. A young man standing next to her, mouth agape, asked her in a hushed tone, “You know him?” “Oh, you mean Hans-Georg? Yes, he comes into the shop every day.”. “Don’t you know? That’s Hans-Georg Gadamer, the most famous philosopher in the world!”. 4/4.

that it was a little talk he was holding and that she was welcome to come since it was open to the public. When my Oma arrived, she was amazed at the lecture hall filled to the brim with people, standing room only. She eventually caught the eye of Hans-Georg, who waved to. 3/.

who worked at the university. After a few years of him coming into the shop, my Oma saw a poster near the university advertising a talk with Hans-Georg’s picture next to it. So, the next time he came in, my Oma asked him about the poster. Hans-Georg chuckled and told her. 2/.

Not my lore, but in the 70s, my Oma (RIP) worked in a flower shop in Heidelberg. Almost every week, an old man would come in, buy a flower, and talk to her. He was incredibly wise, kind, and had an aura that made you listen to every word. She only knew him as Hans-Georg.

Sorry if this has been done to death, but I don't think anyone's asked this one. Share a piece of philosophy lore about yourself!

If you are looking for an introduction to Wittgenstein’s thought (as opposed to a biography), a really nice book is “Wittgenstein” by William Child. He has a pretty orthodox interpretation of Wittgenstein’s work, and I think that is a good place to start.

“Are you saying that all engineers are illiterate”. No, I'm saying is that any engineer can analyze or write a book, but it's utterly impossible for a humanities major to build a rocket. One, from an Intelligence perspective, is objectively harder than the other.

It’s the philosopher Ernst Cassirer’s (1874-1945) birthday today!. Cassirer wasn’t just Heidegger’s interlocutor in the Davos Disputation; he was a thinker in his own right! If you’re interested, I recommend “Cassirer” by Samantha Matherne as an introductory book to his thought.

This is an interesting yet weird book. Has anyone else read this? And if so, what do you make of it?

I have this friend who’s an ultra smart philosophy guy. He’s a professor, loves long walks at the same time every day, 5’2”, likes mustard. Maybe a touch socially awkward but a good dude (he never lies). Legit cannot find a gf. These types of guys used to clean up with women.
