Yea exactly. Harden/Kawhi/Zubac are set. Then I suspect it’s one offense-first player and one defense-first player.
@SamQuinnCBS starting 2 and 4 will either be Beal and Jones Jr or Dunn and Collins. probably the first option if they manage to get Beal.

There's truth to this. I also just feel like saying. we never hear this stuff with Sam Presti. We never hear it with Brad Stevens. The great front offices take input, of course, but they aren't beholden to anyone. Hopefully the Walter version of the Lakers won't have to be.
At a certain point in 2021 I understood Rob Pelinka wasn’t the only dude building the Lakers roster. LeBron & AD had a strong hand in roster building up until the Russ trade. So I was critical of those guys too. Similarly, Luka & JJ are clearly a part of this build.

I'm operating as if Beal, if he signs there, is the starting 2, and if that's the case, I feel like they're gonna want to start someone more defensively-inclined at 4 (like DJJ) to balance both the starting lineup and the bench units.
@SamQuinnCBS Backup big? Did you forget the clips signed Brook Lopez 2/18 with a team option in year 2? Collins is starting at PF.

Paolo is probably the better individual creator. Before you start throwing numbers around, remember he's been doing this on offenses with no spacing. JDub is better at almost everything else. If you have a high-end creator, you'd rather have him. If you don't, you take Paolo.
What’s the argument for Paolo > JDub without mentioning team situation?. Just curious because it seems like most arguments for Paolo are almost never about his actual game.

FWIW I think they're just gonna play minutes with either VJ or Grimes at the 3. They'll be small but there will be so much skill and athleticism on the floor that I think they'll get away with it. Then long-term they'll turn Grimes or McCain into something else.
@SamQuinnCBS No it wouldn’t hurt Philly at all. He’d be all theirs at the ridiculous amount. His problem is they just drafted his position and the kid is a 2 way demon and the have a sharp shooter in McCain coming back.

I'm presuming that whoever starts at 4, I'm guessing Derrick Jones Jr., is more defensively inclined if they're swapping Dunn out of the starting five for Beal. But maybe Beal just comes off the bench. We'll see.
@SamQuinnCBS Think Collins is the starting 4 over “the backup big”.

The other part of the Whitmore thing is. he just wasn't gonna get minutes. It sucks to lose such a promising prospect, but at least it was for a good reason.
Okay this DFS contract takes A LOT of the sting out of the Cam Whitmore trade. It's incredibly team-friendly and will likely turn into a valuable trade piece down the road for Houston. If the price of this deal was Cam's place on the team, I'm more okay with how it went down.

Right now the Sixers have around $21.8 million in second apron room. So if Utah really wants to mess with Philly, it could create the $22 million in cap space and put out an offer sheet that would take the Sixers into the second apron (without further moves).
Jazz could become a Quentin Grimes offer sheet team if they waive two old friends. (They could also use that money to try to get one of the other RFAs out there or take on bad money for assets.).

I did front office rankings in February. I'm revamping in the next week or two. My preliminary list has the Rockets in fourth. Thunder, Celtics, Spurs ahead. You can question the Spurs but I value track records and Pop and RC are still there.
@SamQuinnCBS Where does Stone rank right now in the GM tier list. Presti and Stevens are 1-2. How many guys are definitely better than him?.

I guess that's how he got above the minimum. Good agenting by Bill Duffy. I still just wouldn't have re-signed him at that price.
Jaxson Hayes waived his implicit no-trade clause to re-sign with the Lakers, sources tell @TheAthletic.

I don't know if there was ever a moment when DFS would have accepted this from the Lakers. If there was. colossal misstep on the Lakers part not to give it to him. But I suspect the relationship was so soured by the end that he wasn't taking this from LA.
Update: The Houston Rockets signed Dorian Finney-Smith to a four-year, $53 million deal, which is fully guaranteed the first two seasons, has a third-year non-guaranteed salary, and a fourth-year non-guaranteed salary and player option, league sources told @hoopshype.

Rafael Stone is really, really good at this.

Hasn't stopped the Rockets from improving. Hasn't stopped the Nuggets from improving. Hasn't stopped the Clippers from improving. None of those teams let key free agents walk.
@SamQuinnCBS It’s like people don’t realize this is/was one of the worst free agent classes ever.

Doesn't feel like the best audition for Rob Pelinka with a new owner incoming that has already famously overhauled one historic LA sports franchise and won't be as moved by Laker ties as Jeanie was.

My two immediate thoughts:. - This feels like something the Clippers would do in expectation of landing Bradley Beal. Beal slides into Powell's slot, and then Collins is the new backup big. - The Jazz have now successfully unloaded most of their pricey vets. Epic tank incoming.
BREAKING: The Clippers, Jazz and Heat have agreed to a trade that sends Norman Powell to Miami, John Collins to Los Angeles, and Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson and a 2027 Clippers second-round pick to the Jazz, sources tell ESPN.

It’s just the sort of thing you’d wish they’d grown out of after some of the ways it went wrong with Klutch at the end. Of course, Pelinka being a former agent himself, it’s not exactly surprising that he’d take this approach even if it’s suboptimal.
That Luka, Jaxson and Deandre all share an agent, and after the trends over the last many years with the Lakers going heavy with players sharing LeBron's agent - I'm trying to understand some of the surprise here on how things have gone for LAL this summer so far.
