Mayor Bowser says she hasn’t accepted that the Wizards and Caps are going to Virginia, as announced today in Virginia. She’s offering $500 million in renovations to the Cap Center for them to stay. She denounced the “poaching” of sports businesses.

They’ve blocked the streets and are about to rename Good Hope Road to Marion Barry Avenue to honor the late mayor of DC. The music is jamming with EU and people are dancing to GoGo.

DC is bringing back the Spingarn High Building as the new home for the DC Infrastructure Academy, which trains low income residents for hands on jobs in construction and utilities. PEPCO says is hired or offered jobs to 255 workers since 2018. Project cost $64 million.

Mayor Bowser today declared two emergencies: one on the opioid crisis, the other on juvenile crime. She says opioid deaths involve mainly Black men. This year 151 juveniles have been arrested for carjacking, 97 have been shooting victims and 15 have died.

Mayor Bowser opened what DC is calling a stabilization center to handle people passed out from alcohol and drug overdoses instead of taking them to hospital ERs. Dr Holman of Fire/EMS says such cases are 6% of transports. The mayor says they’re planning 1 and possibly 2 more.

Mayor Bowser came to the old Wendy’s site to begin the demolition of the building to make way for a $41 million redesign of the intersection of Florida and New York Avenues. She says the redesign will take 18 months and improve traffic flow.
