Pedestrians: Try to wear light - colored costumes or reflective materials. If your costume makes it hard for motorists to see you, carry a trick-or-treat bag that reflects light or lights up using LEDs. Be aware that a mask can make it harder for you to see approaching cars.

Motorists continued: Kids may travel in unanticipated ways, like crossing the street when you don’t expect it or darting from between cars on their way to the next house. Expect kids to be paying more attention to the quest for candy than the traffic around them.

Motorists: Be on the watch for pedestrians, especially children, who may be out trick-or-treating with friends and family. Halloween costumes can alter the outline, silhouette, shapes, and sizes of individuals making it harder to recognize them as pedestrians.

Bike Bus leaders were positioned at the front and back to direct the group and act as a “sweeper” to ensure no one was left behind. Additionally, a few participating parents helped as a “corker” to hold traffic until the Bike Bus passed and to guide students at turns.

Beyond the starting location, students joined in as we went along if they were located along the predetermined route. The full ride was an approachable 1.3 miles with strategic stops at intersections that allowed everyone to regroup.

The stars aligned for Thurston Elementary’s 4th Bike Bus of the year to coincide with Walk and Roll to School Day. Families met up at Sugarbush Park with time to slap on reflective bracelets or install bike lights on handlebars and scooter stems for increased visibility.
