Ben Ali may have left, but his victims are still awaiting justice. My latest for @NAWAoD @openDemocracy .

The dangerous narrative, where the former dictator becomes a victim needs to be urgently challenged.

To clarify, a few hours after I posted this, they finally removed the retraction page from my profile on their website. It still exists, but at least they delinked it from me.

I saw that they removed my name, but the article is still on my profile. They not only threw me under the bus because of their mistake and to make themselves look good, they are handling this in a highly unprofessional manner, really unfortunate for an outlet of this calibre (9/9).

I understood that the decision wouldn’t be reversed, so I asked them if they could fix it at least, remove my name and profile, or remove the note, as I don’t want to be associated with something I didn’t write. Instead, I received nothing back. (8/9).

I’m really disappointed that @AJEnglish’s editors, who themselves worked on & approved the piece, & who should know how powerful words & perceptions are, wrote this note misrepresenting my article & making me look like I’m arguing to keep mosques open during the pandemic.(7/9).

Right after the retraction, the page started being circulated as the article AJEnglish retracted because of the author’s argument. It really put me in a bad light, and it took on another story of its own, since the piece itself was unavailable. (6/9).

The retraction itself would have been fine. However, the editor’s note makes it sound like I am arguing that ‘coronavirus measures including the mosque closure’ are Islamophobic. Those who read the piece before the removal know that that is misleading and not true. (5/9)

The piece was edited, sent back & forth by 2 different editors, for 2 weeks, who had no issue with the argument I was making & all the time to ask me to change/remove something. It was also them who wrote the now-removed subtitle which highlights the Coronavirus link(4/9).

I use this example to explain how in different crises the Tunisian state always feels empowered to take action against religious practices. I go from this example to discuss the hijab ban, the niqab ban, the 2003 anti-terrorism law. (3/9).

AJEnglish approached me to write a piece on internalized islamophobia in Tunisia. At the time of writing it, Tunisia issued measures to close down mosques completely while they kept cafes and restaurants open until 4 pm, which was perceived as controversial. (2/9).

On March 30th, @AJEnglish retracted an article of mine, a few hours after publication, leaving on their page, a title and subtitle that I didn't write personally, a misleading retraction note, and my name. the way Al Jazeera handled this situation was pretty surprising. (1/9)

Report abt arresting a moutahajiba, 2009."I am honored to tell u that a moutahajiba has been stopped. after investigation, it became clear that she practices her religious duties regularly".Crazy productive use of police time & state money,& the language is still insane to read

Dec 17 - Jan 14.Happy Revolution Day Tunisia!.Allah bless the souls of those who gave their blood and lives, from French colonialism, to the Bourguiba and Ben Ali eras, so that we can enjoy a free Tunisia without dictatorship today. Long road ahead but we will never go back. <3
