It’s funny that Kingsley Amis disliked Coltrane so much he mentioned it in several novels.

Is American really a constitutional monarchy pretending to be a republic? In an Independence Day provocation @FUSIONaier, Nathan D. Hitchen suggests that we've got the founding all wrong. Response to follow by @McGillPatterson.

As I’ve pointed out before, one main culprits is the ubiquitous quasi-deweyan premise that you can skip technical mastery and background knowledge and move directly to original insight.

Whether or not you agree with specific suggestions, it’s useful to consider what a serious humanities degree course would look like. It’s not that these subjects are inherently easy. For a combination of intellectual, administrative, and political reasons, we WANT them that way.

I was pondering the other day what would be required to make an English major as rigorous as possible (i.e. comparable to a hard science degree). A few tentative thoughts. 1. The major in English should be first and foremost a major in English philology. Every student takes.

Am informed that the chorus to this song is “praise you like I should” not “braise you like I should”.

Tomorrow we honor an American hero who was eaten by a shark. @titusfilm reflects on JAWS as the first and greatest blockbuster, not coincidentally set on the 4th of July.

We also shouldn't exaggerate the appeal of aesthetic RETVRNism. It's major on Twitter, but as far as I can tell has little influence in normie America, which has been pretty consistent in its preference for big car/big lot/warm weather suburbia for many decades.

Even in college towns, faculty with kids tend to live in postwar developments that aren't so different from what you might find anywhere else rather than in sprawling Victorian houses on the village green.

Maybe that's an option for R-voting retirees who would rather just buy a powerboat. But the costs (both monetary and opportunity) seem overwhelming for parents with children.

Nice piece from @aaron_renn. I'm not sure how the assess the financial issues. Political conservatives may have different spending priorities. But life in picturesque retro America is *really* expensive and there aren't a lot of jobs there.

I started watching MIAMI VICE last night and I’m impressed by Michael Mann’s commitment to making no sense at all. The Criterion Channel calls this “formal daring” or something.
