Is American really a constitutional monarchy pretending to be a republic? In an Independence Day provocation @FUSIONaier, Nathan D. Hitchen suggests that we've got the founding all wrong. Response to follow by @McGillPatterson.

Whether or not you agree with specific suggestions, it’s useful to consider what a serious humanities degree course would look like. It’s not that these subjects are inherently easy. For a combination of intellectual, administrative, and political reasons, we WANT them that way.
I was pondering the other day what would be required to make an English major as rigorous as possible (i.e. comparable to a hard science degree). A few tentative thoughts. 1. The major in English should be first and foremost a major in English philology. Every student takes.

Tomorrow we honor an American hero who was eaten by a shark. @titusfilm reflects on JAWS as the first and greatest blockbuster, not coincidentally set on the 4th of July.

Nice piece from @aaron_renn. I'm not sure how the assess the financial issues. Political conservatives may have different spending priorities. But life in picturesque retro America is *really* expensive and there aren't a lot of jobs there.
