This is a well-deserved honor for Seth, who committed to being open, honest and transparent about what he and his Marines saw in combat.

If that’s not enough, consider the words of Abraham Lincoln: "There's no honorable way to kill, no gentle way to destroy. There is nothing good in war, except its ending." Pray for peace.

Maybe William Sherman said it best: “I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.”

Perhaps most of all, I hope they can one day reconcile the fact that their president needlessly placed them in harm’s way — launched them into a pointless war without a strategy, without clear objectives, without legal justification, & without the support of the American people.

Young men and women join the service to fight. They always have. But I hope they stay safe; I hope they all come home alive and in one piece. I hope the war ends before they even get there.

The Marines and sailors of 31st MEU and 11th MEU are now on their way to the Persian Gulf to join those already fighting. I’m sure they are filled with the same naïve, youthful excitement I was when Delta Company flew to Kuwait in early 2003, and I can’t blame them for that.

The U.S. invasion became perhaps the single worst foreign policy decision our country has ever made — one that set the conditions for where we are today in Iran and across the globe.

As it turned out, it was all a lie — one which killed nearly 5,000 Americans, wounded over 32,000, and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis.

As much of a complete bastard as I knew Saddam Hussein to be, I didn’t think President Bush’s administration had made a strong enough case to go to war. I just couldn’t connect the dots. But I went willingly — eagerly— as did my Marines and sailors.

I had private reservations about going to war in Iraq. I was still filled with post-9/11 anger and a thirst for revenge, yet I knew Iraq had nothing to do with it.

I’m humbled to announce the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation selected “Nothing Here Worth Dying For” to receive the 2026 Eugene Sledge Award for Best Memoir. The writing was mine, but it is my team’s story; they deserve this honor. They earned their place in Marine Corps history.

The SoCal Folsom metal-heads topped off No Kings Day with a trip to Chula Vista to see Corrosion of Conformity, Alice Cooper, and Judas Priest.  Yes, it totally rocked.

Many thanks to Dave Gran and Phil Gentile for featuring “Nothing Here Worth Dying For” in the Military Reading Room’s Visiting Authors Corner. They were kind enough not to truncate my long-form responses. https://t.co/94ydxeS9ih
