“Because the community that we support are within the intersections of sex work, race, gender and also potentially precarious status with immigration, or migration status, there are many different challenges they face when accessing health care. ”

@ENBrown @CTVVancouver This story isn’t centred around sex workers or even trafficking victims. It’s about police – police actions, police beliefs and police PR without any critical questions about their effectiveness or the negative impact on sex workers. This is not journalism.

@ENBrown @CTVVancouver These operations cause workers to fear and distrust the police. Calgary’s police chief spoke to CTV about how it’s difficult to protect workers when they don’t report incidents to police. His officers raided massage parlours 7 days before this interview.

Calgary's police chief is encouraging sex trade workers to report abuse, assaults and any other issues they encounter to the recently created Bad Date Line.

@ENBrown @CTVVancouver This story lists trafficking charges from a two-year-old case, but doesn't mention last year's ALERT massage parlour raids. Was it because no trafficking charges have been laid and all police did was shut down a workplace for im/migrant sex workers?
A one-year investigation, three police forces and no trafficking charges. All this time and resources have been used to crack down on adults having sex with each other. On top of that, the CBSA was called and will likely be used to deport workers who don’t identify as “victims.”.

@ENBrown “But the woman they were meeting, whose ID was from the Vancouver area, turns out not to be underage and says she doesn’t need help." The second woman was also just trying to work. Sex workers don't need saving. @CTVVancouver does this “rescue” look like it’s working?.

@ENBrown The so-called “elite counter-exploitation unit” explains certain emojis in sex work ads are evidence of trafficking. This would have been a good time for journalists to use critical thinking and question how emojis would trigger a rescue operation.

These missions are often a crackdown on sex work that leads to increased surveillance, arrest & harassment of workers. @ENBrown writes authorities rebranded vice stings by calling them "human trafficking operations" and reporters just parrot the language.
reason.com
It's a bad idea, and it's spawning a whole lot of bad information about sex trafficking.

It’s hard to believe a reporter would follow police while they pose as clients to trick sex workers into meeting, just so officers could question women about being trafficked. But @CTVVancouver found nothing unethical about this story or police actions:
The covert operation to try and help sex trafficking victims. The latest in my series. @ctvvancouver

Black cop is accused of trafficking his white wife - "The passenger claimed Williams, 63, was transporting Shasholka, 34, against her will, an obvious example of racial profiling and abject discrimination, it says." .

Exclusive: Anthony Williams “spent his life fighting crime, and now to be accused of a crime so heinous as trafficking his own wife is unfathomable,” attorney Jasmine Rand told The Independent.
