Throughout the Smash journey, Mario got stabbed by Ridley, blown up by Minecraft creepers & nearly beheaded by Sephiroth.
He went through lots, but never gave in to the darkness that plagued him.
So, he was able to summon Sora, the last fighter, into Smash's world.

Iizuka never said in the interview that there's a Shadow game in the works. He said that they want to create a Sonic game with Shadow in it in the future for fans.
