NYC, we have a DUAL stream recycling program! Paper & cardboard go in your GREEN BIN, separate from your metal/glass/plastic/carton recycling. It DOESN’T go to the same place! The rule for paper and cardboard in NYC…if you can rip it, you can recycle it! Always #recycleright

Tiz the season for holiday lights. When it’s time to throw old lights away, remember, they are NOT recyclable. String lights are called “tanglers” because they TANGLE in our sorting equipment. Not a happy holiday moment! Old, broken string lights are trash. #recycleright

NYC, after you place your used Nespresso pods in your recycling bin with other metals, glass bottles & jars, & hard plastic, we separate the pods and put them through a special shredder, removing the coffee grounds so we can recycle the metal. Check it out!

Back to school is soon approaching. When shopping for supplies, instead of getting all the shiny new things, try #REUSING what you already have. Remember the 3 R words…. 1) #Reduce .2) #Reuse .3) #Recycle. In that order! The best way to create less waste is to use less stuff!

In NYC, pizza boxes ARE recyclable even if they’re greasy. Just don’t leave any pizza in the box! Live outside of NYC? Your recycling program may or may not accept pizza boxes, or they may only accept clean pizza boxes. Look up your recycling guidelines & #recycleright 🍕👍♻️.

NY City Council recently passed the Zero Waste Act including mandatory residential curbside composting, 2030 zero-waste targets, annual reporting on waste efforts, the establishment of food drop off sites AND community recycling centers in all five boroughs. Congrats NYC!!!

We sort #glass from metals, plastics, & cartons using disc screens, a row of spinning metal rods. As the rods spin, materials like metal and plastic containers roll over the top, while glass breaks into small pieces that fall through two inch openings in between the disc screens.

While some recycled glass goes back into bottles & jars, some is used as recycled glass aggregate (RGA), functioning as a filler in road projects or as pipe bedding. We used recycled glass as a decoration AND as filler to raise our waterfront facility above the flood line!

While NYS did not pass EPR (extended producer responsibility) for packaging, we did get EPR for carpeting! By 2026, there will be more opportunities and requirements around carpet recycling, keeping more of this material out of the waste stream and in use. #EPR

That’s NOT trash! It’s recycling! Trash/garbage is something we use once & throw away, never to be used again, but recyclables are useful RESOURCES that CAN be used again IF they are placed in the correct recycling bin. So check your local recycling guidelines and #recycleright

Pen out of ink? Refill & reuse if you can! But when it is no longer useful, it belongs in the trash. Multi-material items like pens are very difficult to recycle, so they generally are not accepted in recycling programs. Always look up YOUR recycling guidelines & #recycleright !
