Amazed by "On Wars." Great combo of historical wisdom and theoretical power. Macrohistorical analysis, at its best, makes the most lasting contributions to the social sciences. But it is a risky endeavor: many try, few succeed. Michael Mann is a super champion.

Political Economy for Political Scientists. If you are skeptical about the value of models, these 5 pieces will change your mind for two reasons. 1) They deal with HUGE outcomes--of Marx/Weber-scale. 2) Math produces insights that verbal languages cannot.
