[LISTEN] In this recording, the JHB Mayor is heard explaining the City’s clean-up campaign, where #informaltraders & the working poor are scapegoated. He openly dismisses the Courts & outlines a vision for the inner city that is, & promises to be, especially hostile to the poor.
The city's vision of the inner city does not include the poor-who have lived and worked downtown for decades since its collapse.

[INFORMAL TRADE] A functional, transparent permit system for informal traders is long overdue. While traders are committed to working with the City to ensure orderly and lawful trading, they remain frustrated by the ongoing lack of clarity and consistency from officials.

[INFORMAL TRADE] Despite several challenges along the way, over 220 traders have taken part in the court-mandated registration and verification process for informal traders in the Jhb inner-city.
[INFORMAL TRADE] Earlier this month, the Jhb High Court ordered the City of Jhb to urgently & speedily engage with the South African Informal Traders Forum (SAITF), regarding the registration of traders, their verification, and the allocation of trading spaces in the inner city.

This follows the unlawful and forcible removal of traders from their trading spaces since the beginning of October. The registration and verification process is currently underway. SERI has been monitoring the process.
