Congrats to @JulieELarson, one of the @ESArestore early career publication award winners! For the paper, Julie counted THOUSANDS of seeds over the years to explore how functional ecology drives success in restoration. Find her at #ESA2022!

Seeding has been helping sagebrush recover after wildfire across the western US: new pub using satellite data and stats to correct for treatment. To detect impacts of restoration treatments, accounting for where treatments take place is essential!

Nature Communications - Postfire sagebrush seeding treatments are widely applied across the western USA but evidence for the success of this restoration approach has been variable. Examining...

Very hapy to share our latest #openaccess article in @ScientificData
https://t.co/5eGgGGUkem Here we introduce MOISCRUST, a unique database including 14 yr of continous surface (0-5 cm) soil moisture values in bare ground, plant and biocrust microsites

finally Marie-Anne de Graaf and Sabrina Schuler presented on research showing the power of biochar to improve sagebrush establishment after fire--a relatively simple tool with benefits from soil moisture to plant growth to microbial communities.

Cara Applestein of USGS FRESC demonstrated how fungal infections interact with post-fire conditions in cheatgrass, one of our most terrible species. understanding these fungus-plant interactions could lead to new insight on mass dieoffs of cheatgrass

Olga Kildisheva of The Nature Conservancy presented an overview of the precision restoration activities TNC is deploying in sagebrush steppe, including targeted techniques, species, and locations to improve outcomes

Rabbitbrush provides valuable services for insect pollinators and primary succession after severe disturbance @TrevorFaske used rangewide genetic data to demonstrate how environmental and geographic forces have shaped populations of this species in the west

Alison Agneray of UNR combined evolutionary history and coexistence theory with restoration concepts by looking at experimental plantings of different restoration species. Considering taxonomic diversity in plantings yields interesting results that can improve restoration

seed viability is critical for restoration efforts that distribute seeds over large areas of land. @dr_sowards demonstrated some promising results of an experimental fungicide treatment to enhance viability of bluebunch wheatgrass seeds--an important species across the region

Dr. Andrew Kulmatiski convinced us all why belowground processes are important for Great Basin restoration with some experiments demonstrating the power of activated carbon to jumpstart seedling establishment--probably due to microbial activity

Ruth Griggs and Tessa Bartz of UNR described how the environment mother plants grow in influences performance of seeds across environmental gradients--really important work that might inform seed collection efforts for restoration

Dr. Stella Copeland of USDA ARS presented some ongoing work investigating why seedlings die during restoration projects. Her work represents an important step towards understanding demographic mechanisms of restoration success or failure in the Great Basin
