South Carolina's electric co-ops congratulate Tamarion Watkins of Northwestern High School for being named this year's Mr. Football for South Carolina.

South Carolina's electric cooperatives are proud to be part of this amazing day.

It followed similar events for journalists in the Charleston and Columbia markets. These gatherings have generated a dozen (so far) news stories about S.C.'s electric cooperatives and forged stronger relationships between our co-ops and the news outlets that tell our story.

Then came a detailed discussion about the peak-based rates these co-ops and others have adopted in recent years to give their members more control of their power bills. This was the third Co-op Media Day we have organized over the past few months.

Our final Co-op Media Day of 2025 is in the books! Reporters from the @PCMyrtleBeach, @wpdeabc15 and @MyHorryNews joined @HorryElectric and @SanteeElectric in Conway for a day of discussion and activities focused on electric cooperatives, outage restoration and power bills.

This is the second Co-op Media Day event we’ve organized this fall. It follows a similar event for Columbia-area news outlets at Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative in Lexington. Next up: Coastal/Pee Dee Co-op Media Day this Friday at @HorryElectric in Conway.

There, they had an opportunity to quiz co-op executives during live Q&A sessions, experience a live-line demonstration, soar in the bucket of a co-op truck, and get a closer look at the equipment co-ops use to restore power after major storms.

Leaders from four Lowcountry electric cooperatives came together to proactively tackle the two topics news outlets call us about the most: power outages and power bills. More than a dozen Charleston-area reporters joined us for the event.

Restoring power is already a dangerous job, but S.C. electric cooperative workers also had to worry about threats and harassment as they labored after Hurricane Helene last fall. Now, co-ops are pushing for legislation to protect restoration workers:

One year ago, Hurricane Helene devastated SC: 41 lives lost, 425k co-op members in the dark, 3,500+ homes destroyed, 5,000+ poles snapped. But 3,400+ lineworkers—and countless staff, families & retirees—came together. A true cooperative effort.

S.C.'s electric co-ops are closely watching this tropical system (Invest 94L). We hate seeing the possibility that the storm could be heading our way, but we want to make sure you're paying attention as this storm could be affecting us by early next week.

We recently hosted more than a dozen Midlands news reporters for a behind-the-scenes look at how co-ops prepare for, respond to, and learn from major storms. Fingers crossed we won't face another storm like Helene for a long while, but we're doing everything we can to prepare.

Palmetto Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round Up fund recently distributed more than $67,000 in grants to local charities. The recipients included Bluffton Self Help, Meals-on-Wheels, the Children’s Center and the Bluffton Community Kitchen.
