September 8 is #Pardon Day! Prior to 1950, pardons were issued by the governor and sent to the county clerks through the Secretary of State. Attached are petitions for a case in Colleton County that was initially rejected but later reversed upon review in 1900.

21-26 ATOMIC BOMB ACCIDENT AT MARS BLUFF, MARCH 11, 1958 E. MARION HWY. MARS BLUFF In 1958, in the midst of the Cold War, the U.S.A.F. accidentally dropped an atomic bomb near here. The unarmed 7,600-lb., 10’8”-long bomb was aboard a B-47E bomber on a training mission.

OTD in 1775, the SC Commons House of Assembly met for the last time. It would be formally dissolved by the Royal Governor on Sept. 15. The House’s journal, part of the collection of the SCDAH, records its final meeting.

20-8 FAIRFIELD COUNTY COURTHOUSE ON THE WALL OF THE FAIRFIELD COUNTY COURTHOUSE, WINNSBORO This courthouse was built in 1822 by Wm. McCreight under the supervision of Robert Mills, SC architect, then serving as Supt. of Public Works. Alterations and additions were made in 1844.

SCDAH recently added a microfilm copy of a Civil War Era newspaper. The Daily South Carolinian was microfilmed by the Library of Congress and covers the year 1861 to 1862. Attached is a city ordinance raising taxes, including taxes on enslaved persons and free persons of color.

20-23 CAMP WELFARE CAMP WELFARE RD., 2.5 S. OF WATEREE RD., MITFORD This camp ground, described by one journalist as “picturesque, rugged, simple with an overhanding air of festivity,” has hosted an annual camp meeting since 1876; slaves had worshipped here before the Civil War.
