10/ California has the chance to become a national leader in protecting Civil Rights with the passage of SB509. This would set a clear precedent that any foreign intimidation against Americans on US Soil will NOT be tolerated.

9/ Importantly: SB 509’s protections are for all diaspora and immigrant communities, not just one group. These protections against foreign intimidation would help the 3.5 million people at risk of being victims of TNR (@FreedomHouse).

8/ The dangers of doing nothing are real: when foreign governments can freely harass through digital or real-world means without consequences, vulnerable communities suffer in silence. SB509 is a proactive tool, not a weapon.

7/ SB 509 has broad, bipartisan support so far. In the Senate, it passed unanimously (38-0). It’s also backed by organizations representing immigrant rights and law enforcement leaders.

6/ Why does California need #SB509? Because 48 foreign governments have been documented using digital surveillance, disinformation, and threats to silence diaspora activists. It’s time to protect Californians from transnational repression.
