MAGA Christians have been doing on the right what James Talarico is doing on the left for a decade - applying public faith in distorted ways that serve political ideology (the political tail wagging the spiritual dog). But now they are shocked and appalled by Talarico. Selective.

Tim Keller was right that applying the same biblical standard equally will often draw ire from both the political left and right. Christianity is not the mushy middle. It’s the rock on which idols are dashed.

Isn’t it strange…Evangelicals are all over social media holding Bad Bunny to a higher standard for his language and behavior than they do their President.

I share this post in earnest and (what may prove a naive) hope that a few people caught in the situation I’m about to describe will hear instead of rushing to the usual tropes, criticisms and caricatures. For what it’s worth, I offer this in good faith. Between 2016 and 2022, I

If the Church’s only response to evil is whataboutisms, then we have utterly failed in our sacred calling to be salt and light in the world. Why can’t we simply deal with the issue at hand?

In his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," Dr King wrote: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." This includes unjust laws...AND unjust enforcement of laws. All my 'rule of law' friends don't get to give ICE an exemption from being held accountable.

Seriously, I grew up in a conservative "Christian" home with 4 sisters. My parents homeschooled, went to church 2X on Sundays, and voted straight Republican. But my dad was an abusive misogynist. Guess how many of my sisters are still Christians? 0. Guess how many vote

It’s perfectly good and desirable for individuals, churches, etc. to meet the needs of their neighbors where they can, but government has a role to play because making provision for the vulnerable is not simply a matter of charity but of justice. It is not just a “nice-to-have.”
"Shouldn't Christians support max-boosting welfare programs, because Jesus said to feed the hungry and the early church was marked by generosity to the poor?" 1) No, using the government to forcefully take other people's money against their will and redistribute it was not a

To vote Democrat does not automatically mean that you support gay marriage, and/or pro-choice abortion position. To vote Republican does not automatically mean that you’re racist, agree with censoring innocuous books regarding slavery, race, or biographies/autobiographies

But then you look at their feeds and see that they are calling down the wrath of the Internet upon the church that **checks notes** (a) fails to mention their favorite political causes from the pulpit or (b) practices internal church discipline not to their liking. 2/3

The folks advocating for state Christianity always try to reassure folks who remember that state Christianity burns Christians at the stake by telling us that they have no interest in persecuting other Christians when they ascend their worldly throne. 1/3

Socialist nations outside the west bear witness to multiple flourishing churches and church planting movements. Maybe the issue in the US isn't progressivism, but people unwilling to live and minister among them. It's called a "confounding variable." Just spit-balling.
Facts….churches flourish and evangelism increases in politically conservative regions and churches die in liberal/socialist/progressive communities and cities. My friend Josh Howerton @howertonjosh nails it here 👇🏼
