"The U.S. healthcare sector alone generates 1.7 million tons of plastic pollution every year, or about 8.5% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. An estimated 20 to 25% of the more than 14,000 tons of trash hospitals across the country produce every day is plastic.".

Did you know? . 5.5 billion beverage containers get sold in the state of Maryland *every year*. These bottles are made of aluminum, plastic, or glass and only 25% get recycled. The rest end up as landfill or litter.

Economic arguments for these petrochemical plants are empty promises. And this doesn’t even factor in the billions of dollars in healthcare costs from health problems attributable to their plants and products.

It emits multiple air pollutants that cause respiratory & neuropsychiatric harm. It encourages urban sprawl, which lessens green spaces, increases urban heat islands & limits opportunities for safe outdoor recreation & physical activity. This legislation requires state & regional.

3) The Climate & Transportation Alignment Act (HB 84/ SB395): Transportation is the largest contributor (by sector) to greenhouse gas emissions in Maryland & the United States.

Write to your legislators to support the Transportation and Climate Alignment Act that would cut pollution from our highways and invest in public transit, walking, and biking.

in their community, & adding a new polluter would increase the cumulative impact on that community. The CHERISH Act requires consideration of the environmental justice score of underserved/overburdened communities in new permit determinations.

The CHERISH Act addresses these environmental injustices. Currently, when MD Department of Environment approves environmental permits, it only assesses the expected pollution from that company. But we know that structurally marginalized communities already have multiple polluters.

2) The CHERISH (Cumulative Harms to Environmental Restoration for Improving Shared Health) Act (SB978): Communities that have been politically, economically, & socially excluded typically bear the brunt of the environmental health harms (e.g. Curtis Bay).

Reducing litter/landfill has important environmental health benefits. By reducing the 2.6 billion plastic bottles that are littered or landfilled in MD each year, we can reduce the amount of microplastics & related chemicals that end up in our environment & ultimately our bodies.
