Going into the final weekend of @ALLIANCE_Hockey U16 play, maybe the most interesting story is the Lambton Jr. Sting. This is a team who lost two top end prospects in the offseason and yet they control their own destiny to gain home ice in the first round. Pretty impressive.

I remember in 2015 we ranked Owen Tippett #1 despite him going #4 in the OHL Draft. One of the separating values we had for Tippett wasn’t that he was scoring goals, it was the quality of goal he was scoring. Many of his goals in U16 would have beat OHL goaltenders.

Drew Bate of the London Jr. Knights was our big riser this ranking. Drew has scored a lot of goals but something I value more than numbers is the quality of goal being scored. Drew has scored a lot of these high level goals where it doesn’t matter who’s in net, it’s going in. 1/2

“I know it was bardown but you gotta make a save there” Rule of thumb, if it touches the bar and goes in, you cannot put that on the goaltender. Sometimes the shot is so good there’s little a goaltender can do.

I don’t blame the Canadian announcers for being frustrated by the diving done by USA’s Abbey Murphy. But it’s really on the officiating crew. I’m not a fan of it, but if the officials don’t have the awareness, Murphy is well within her right to keep exploiting it for power plays.

I’ve had no formal media training. I come straight from the hockey side. But I’m glad I got in at a time where I got to meet and talk to absolute media legends in the game like Pete James in London & Don Cameron in Kitchener. True gems that are rare to find in this world. RIP.

This one hits pretty hard. Years and years of going into the scout room. Often the first voice I hear is Pete “How are you my boy” countless conversations, many interviews. The first one I ever did was with Mike Stubbs and I wore Pete’s headset. It was an honour to know this man.

Regarding the “not conforming” what I mean by that is not to participate in group think. It’s important to reassess and reevaluate when your opinions and views are challenged. But if you go through the process and come up with the same result then stick by it.

I’ll still never forget when I was head scout of the NHL and OHL Draft with HP, people saying we put Nathan MacKinnon over Seth Jones on our ranking to be “different” and “for clicks”. The only way to separate yourself is to not conform, ignore the noise and trust what you see.

What I’m saying is I’m prepping you for when Brady Martin is a full time NHLer and ESPN says “NO ONE HAD BRADY MARTIN TOP 5” you’ll know ahead of time, HP did. He was 4th. Yet lots of places that show multiple service rankings don’t include them. Why? You’ll have to ask them.

I’ve got the Vegas Golden Knights Anaheim Ducks game on talking about how Beckett Sennecke went 3rd and “no one had him top 10. He was ranked 13th. NO ONE HAD HIM TOP 10” Wrong @ScoutingService had him 6th. Like when Easton Cowan went 1st Rd and “NO ONE” had him there. HP did.

1-0 London after two periods. Finley Butler with the only goal for London. Rylan DaCosta has been huge for Huron-Perth.
