I found this article very interesting: https://t.co/Fezx1m8vI6 It's about the AIDS healthcare foundation trying to operate an SRO to offer very low-income housing. It's been making the rounds on Twitter recently again, with many people outraged by it: the housing does not look

This is a good point, one that raises hard questions about affordability: are well-intentioned eviction policies doing more harm than good, especially for the people they're intended to help? I explore these trade-offs in the link below.

I really liked @RyanPuzycki's essay on the history of the government's successful war on SROs. I am somewhat skeptical we'd see this housing typology come back in a world of liberalized housing markets, for reasons I lay out in my latest newsletter

In a world of free markets in housing, we shouldn't necessarily expect rooming houses to make a comeback.

The cheaper housing that SRO re-legalization permits will prevent currently precarious people from falling into chronic unsheltered homelessness in the first place. That’s where the enormous long term value lies - throttling the pipeline of future homeless.

While I support SRO re-legalization, I'm skeptical that they'll cut unsheltered homelessness. - Most homeless aren't unsheltered. - The percentage of unsheltered homeless who currently refuse a free shelter bed but will pay $12/night and not cause issues is...small.

Enjoyed this post on the banning and decline of single room occupancy hotels as the kind of housing that used to take in many people who are homeless today, but also enjoyed many of the other posts by @RyanPuzycki — lots of good stuff in there

One reason cities are so focused on “affordable housing” is they have regulated out of existence the naturally occurring cheap housing options which once kept people out of homelessness

We talk endlessly about the "missing middle" of housing, but the real catastrophe was the “banished bottom”—the deliberate destruction of the cheapest rung of the housing ladder. Essay below.

Since my interview with @gmetcalf in January, what is now the “Suisun Expansion Project" has evolved to encompass a new shipyard and manufacturing center. Very exciting to see this expanded vision move one step closer to becoming reality! https://t.co/gDigWgjUIv

1/ 🇺🇸 Today, @CAForever submitted detailed plans for the next great American city, an hour north of Silicon Valley, including: Solano Foundry, America’s largest manufacturing park, Solano Shipyard, our largest shipyard, and walkable neighborhoods for 400,000 Californians.

1) Strong Towns finding that small-lot development yields more tax revenue/per acre than big box stores. 2) City of Yes's @RyanPuzycki emphasizing the value of small lots, and not just density/stacking, in urbanism. 3) @Cobylefko's piece on the profitability of small lots.
