In 2018, a statue was desecrated by two St. John Fisher students. They said they were drunk. A witness claimed he heard them using racial slurs. The students pleaded guilty to criminal mischief. We covered that story, too: https://t.co/YgiXfr0znI

Authorities have not labeled the suspects as Marxists, mobs, white supremacists, liberals or conservatives. I spent my day tracking down facts for this story. People don’t need to make up their own for political gain. We’ll continue to accurately report on the investigation.

There are 15 Frederick Douglass monuments in Rochester. The original is the first statue in the U.S. to memorialize an African American. It now resides in Highland Park. 10,000 people attended the unveiling in 1899, including Theodore Roosevelt. Here are photos of it then:

Rochester has a long history of activism. Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass are buried here. The Underground Railroad gave slaves a path to freedom here. Douglass’ “The North Star” antislavery newspaper was published here.

On July 5, 1852, Douglass commended the Founding Fathers' vision but said July 4 was a day of mourning. He believed it was hypocritical to celebrate a day of freedom when Black people were not free.
