How the West can peacefully and cost-effectively promote an end to the Russo-Ukrainian War while supporting Ukraine:. Increase oil production. Doing so would lower oil prices and compel Russia to cease hostile activities, just as we've seen before many times in their history.

Russia is trying to get a ceasefire agreement where their oil and gas facilities will be protected, which only demonstrates the importance of the revenue steam from this industry to the Russian state. The US and Europe should make it a top priority to increase drilling.

Look at this map and consider that Norway is considered an "energy powerhouse." The UK and Netherlands have much more potential and are choosing not to take advantage of it for whatever reason.

The UK and Netherlands could have increased oil and gas production, crashed energy prices, bankrupted Russia, and forced it to abandon its war in Ukraine years ago. Instead, for political reasons, they chose to have the world rely on Russian energy and let Ukraine suffer.

Another article by RT talking about Ukrainian attacks on their energy infrastructure. Must really be starting to hurt, since this is at least the 5th article this week on the subject. So not only does Russia have to deal with $66/barrel oil, but less export volume as well.

With regard to the "Russia speaking" claim by @SteveWitkoff. Census date from the Russian Empire in the 19th century shows these regions were all Ukrainian speaking. The only reason they speak Russian today is because of decades of forced Russification.

It’s clear from this that the only difference between Steve Witkoff’s and Vladmir Putin’s views on the war in Ukraine is that Putin actually knows the names of all the five Ukrainian regions he wants to keep.

It's strange that people seem to forget that actual legitimate polls took place in 2014 on this issue on whether these regions should join Russia. Results:. Donetsk: ~27%.Zaporizhia: ~6%.Luhansk: ~30%.Kherson: ~3.5%. Overwhelming rejection. source:

We hope that the measures proposed here can help bring about a peaceful and diplomatic solution, where the security concerns and national interests of both Ukraine and Russia, as well as the desires of the civilians living in the contested territories, are all taken into account.

Given that the West has spent >$150 billion to date. The costs of the measures proposed here are on a relative basis extremely cheap and thus extremely cost-effective.

We proposed that the West peacefully and cost-effectively promote an end to the war in a manner favorable to Ukraine by increasing energy supply and lowering energy demand, thereby lowering prices and reducing the revenues that Russia relies upon to fund its war in Ukraine.

We discussed an interesting characteristic of energy prices:. How energy's inelasticity results in relatively small changes in supply and demand drastically affecting its price. Illustrative historical examples were provided.

Conclusions:. We demonstrated the extent to which the Russian economy, government, and military depend on energy revenues, both historically and currently. We discussed how low energy prices have caused numerous financial crises in Russia in the past.

For example, the EU began increasing alternative energy production with its REPowerEU plan and now generates more electricity from wind and solar than from natural gas. And the USA is set to increase coal production. Such efforts are commendable and should be encouraged.
