I strongly welcome the Industrial Strategy. It’s a serious, long-term plan to mobilise to take advantage of the opportunities of the decade ahead. It deserves broad support - Britain needs to be a dependable place for long term investors again.

Important to consider impact on jobs. I was glad to open the wind turbine plant in Hull, creating 1,000+ good jobs. Clean energy is growing worldwide. Whether wind, electric motors, batteries or nuclear, we should not distance ourselves from UK strengths and sources of jobs.
Countries like China and UAE have long term horizons, enabling them to innovate- driving down costs of clean energy & the technologies to deliver it. Multi-parliament policies like the Climate Change Act enable that in UK. Short-termism is enemy of growth. https://t.co/14h5CSgGbz

I’m grateful to my successor for pressing the govt to bring into force my & @DXW_KC’s Private Members Act outlawing deliberate public sexual harassment of women, passed with cross party support. Disappointed the govt voted against doing so today. I hope they reconsider in Lords.

I worked with Michael Ellam on financial services when I was a Treasury Minister. He was one of the most outstanding officials in the civil service, universally respected. It is a coup for the UK to have him back in public service.
Michael Ellam just confirmed as Starmer’s G7/G20 Sherpa and lead on EU - as anticipated on @polcurrency. Michael worked with me in the Treasury and is one of the sharpest, most strategic minds, in the best traditions of the impartial civil service

I’m glad that the Strategy will be broad - incl. advanced manufacturing, creative industries, clean energy, defence, digital & tech, financial services, life sciences and professional & business services. I hope it will be built on a strong role for cities, UK nations & regions.

It’s good news that the UK will have an Industrial Strategy again. Investors respond positively to clarity and stability of policy, driving growth. It’s strongly in our national interest for this to succeed. I hope its development will gain cross party support.
We're delivering an Industrial Strategy that will give businesses the confidence they need to plan for the next 10 years and beyond. At its heart will be the Industrial Strategy Advisory Council, led by Microsoft UK CEO, @clarebarclay 👇 https://t.co/v764htowSQ

I had the privilege of meeting Mr Tata many times when I was Business Secretary. He was a man of great wisdom as well as achievement - with a fierce insistence on high standards, always a long term perspective, and a thoughtful, self-effacing approach. He will be much missed.

I am deeply saddened by the death of Ratan Tata, an outstanding leader of business. Mr Tata made a big, enduring contribution to the livelihoods of many people in UK - especially through rescuing JLR & his devoted support of the work of @wmgwarwick at the University of Warwick.

Thank you to my successor @ThreshedThought for pressing the Government today to take the final step to bring into force my Private Member’s Bill (now an Act of Parliament) which made the sexual harassment of women and girls in public a criminal offence.
Today I asked the government when they intend to bring into force the law making harassment of women in public a crime (a law that has already been passed and just needs the government to update relevant regulations).
