That people are forced to spend significant portions of their lives writing things they have no wish to express is only one of the crippling consequences of the "bucket theory of the mind" (criticised by Popper) that pervades education theory and practice, and beyond.

Fascinating! I advised students that faked essays were shoddy. Almost certain I discovered one being used once, when a student I failed complained that they should have got a 2:1. Because they drew attention, then discovered another student had a very similar essay…!

And let me add a methodological point: Framing research in terms of increasing a number, such as Q_plasma or Q_total, rewards incremental-type research and penalises more fundamental, idea-based research.
