My review of BEYOND THE ICON: ASIAN AMERICAN GRAPHIC NARRATIVES has been published in the latest issue of BIOGRAPHY. In my introduction, I discuss how Asian characters were portrayed in the very first issue of DETECTIVE COMICS, the comic that would eventually feature Batman.

MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR is a post-apocalyptic chase movie, a refined prototype for not only the next three films in the saga but every “End of the World” movie or TV show thereafter.

MAD MAX is basically a Western with cars and motorcycle gangs, a pre-apocalyptic revenge flick with outstanding action. It’s the kind of exploitation flick from the days of VHS where you’re like, “Whoa, what is THIS?”

Ultimately, THE BIKERIDERS becomes a pseudo-love triangle, a tug of war between Kathy who wants Benny to leave the club when things get too dangerous and Jerry who wants him to stay on as his eventual successor.

Rounding out the cast is Jodie Comer as Benny’s tough-talking wife Kathy, who narrates the film in a Midwestern accent that is hilariously thick and makes the actress seem 20 years older than Butler, but I think this true-to-life quirk made the film more interesting & less cliche

However, the film actually centers on Benny, the “Rebel Without a Cause”-type youth played by Austin Butler, channeling all his Elvis swagger into the role. We’ve seen this character a million times before, but Butler actually comes across as the real deal, not a poseur.

Speaking of bygone eras, THE BIKERIDERS documents the brief history of an Illinois motorcycle club founded by Johnny (Tom Hardy), a family man whose life is forever changed by seeing Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.”

It doesn’t matter whether the movie was good, bad, or just okay—we all watched it, especially when it came out on VHS. But that era is over.

My new essay on Jun Ichikawa's adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s TONY TAKITANI is a personal one, inspired by the sale of my parents’ home, their possessions, and my beloved Star Wars collection. The essay is about a specific film, but it’s also about me.

Jun Ichikawa's 'Tony Takitani' contemplates the inevitable conclusion of all the collections we attempt to build for ourselves.
