Every academic friend should read this painfully astute take on the spiritual element of the job crisis.

Important moment of reflection. Was told one of my email accounts was to be deactivated, so went through the inbox and folders to see what I needed to keep/forward/download. It’s revealing and a little humbling to realize how few of those messages needed to be kept at all.

In 1894, the Tsar stood for the Marseillaise, an act of respect for a revolutionary anthem impossible for his predecessors. He did so to mark a new alliance w/France, made possible by the blundering, blustering policies of Wilhelm II, who drove friends away and enemies together.
