Spent a lovely day visiting Fr. William at St. Paul’s, Carroll Street, an extraordinary Anglo-Catholic church in Brooklyn. Stunning architecture by the Upjohn family and Ralph Adams Cram, and a historic commitment to the Black West-Caribbean community still worshiping there.

Anglicanism in New York is strikingly and almost frustratingly consistent in its low church character.

A real pleasure to preach at the beautiful Epiphany Day mass at St. John's in the Village in NYC yesterday.

Today is the feast of St. Cecilia, the Roman virgin-martyr who, tradition says, chanted to God at her death. Her beautiful basilica in Trastevere still preserves her memory, along with Maderno’s moving sculpture. Patron of music, she inspired Purcell, Guido Reni, and many others.

Wonderful Ely Cathedral. The highlight was Bishop Peter Gunning, fierce royalist, anti-Cromwell, and a 1662 BCP contributor, looking superb in effigy. The Lady Chapel’s Mary statue is… unique; never seen that iconography before! Glorious stonework in the chantries.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

"Think of your child, then, not as dead, but as living; not as a flower that has withered, but as one that is transplanted, and touched by a Divine hand, is blooming in richer colors and sweeter shades than those of earth". Richard Hooker
