To be clear you’re saying that the sub 500 games are equally as challenging. Run with that logic it’s a great take.
Alabama’s “value SOS above all else!” argument is also odd because they didn’t lose to the toughest opponents on their schedule. They lost to two .500 teams. They played the better teams just fine!.

I think it’s pretty simple. You want the least number of challenging games you can schedule. You’re going to have to already play the conf games. The opportunities to lose against p4 competition in non conf outweigh the upside of winning as shown.
Alabama’s bad losses were CONFERENCE games. I have no idea why people are trying to make this a referendum on nonconference scheduling.
