Friday fun in the lab, running our Ecuador field site samples looking for parasites that infect millions of children. We will be using our multi-parallel real-time quantitative PCR to detect 12 parasites in dirt samples. @BCM_TropMed

Excited to start our NIH funded research on developing a diagnostic test-of-cure for Chagas disease. A disease that impacts millions of people globally and can lead to fatal cardiac disease.

Our study on a new Chagas test to diagnose dogs is out! 1/3 of dogs can be infected with T. cruzi that can lead to heart disease and death. Also, these dogs are reservoir host for triatomine bugs that can then infect humans. @BCM_TropMed .

Our Tropical Medicine labs are using the Tc24 recombinant Trypanosoma cruzi antigen to diagnose Chagas disease in resource limited areas. We can also use it to quantitate the amount of anti-T. cruzi IgG as it increases with age, possibly from worsening disease. @BCM_TropMed

@BCM_TropMed @PeterHotez What did we find? Parasitic infections changed by age, with Ascaris and Trichuris predominance for helminths, and Giardia for protozoa.

@BCM_TropMed @PeterHotez Some info on this extensive study. 401 children were followed at 7 months and 13 months, and 2,3,5, and 8 years. A total of 2005 stool samples were analyzed for 8 intestinal parasites with multi-parallel real-time quantitative PCR, that we developed specifically for this study.
