I feel like people should be more self-reflective and acknowledge how much of their music taste is influenced by context. The context of where you heard the song, what it personally reminds you of etc is going to be different for each person. You can't ever separate yourself from

that context. When you listen to a new song you have the context of every song that you've listened to before. Similar songs you may have emotional attachment to. Artists you may have emotional attachment to. I think so many people end up loving video game/movie/anime OSTs is

because they come ready-made with context of appreciation. You played the game so you understand what the purpose of the song was. It's impossible to evaluate music without any context but it seems like a lot of people don't really consider that.

@RoggolIsMe I don’t really understand this. The thing about context for forming a taste is mostly true. But giving each song an experience is nearly impossible since every day I spend at least an hour exploring new music. And some of my faves I don’t correlate with any experience at all.

@DelAireAnime The context is every song you’ve ever listened to before informing the context for what you’re listening to now. It’s less concrete but the context is still omnipresent

@RoggolIsMe Agreed people need to understand that it won't be the same for everyone, the discourse of rap vs video game OST etc really doesn't make sense

@RoggolIsMe Yeahh. That's why I always try to watch the Bollywood films if I like their albums for more context. Same with anime op/eds I try to avoid listening to them in isolation before I reach them in the series. Another thing is we've music associated with certain period of our life

@RoggolIsMe Omg yes, this is super important for me with music. All my favorite songs I have like an attached memory to them or multiple memories. If I were to listen to Sorairo Days I get teleported back to when I watched that final EP

@RoggolIsMe This is a bit off topic but this is why I like to say “favorite” instead of “best”. I really can’t evaluate taste objectively because there’s usually some context behind it.
