Most people will be simply embarrassed by this short outbreak of flagshagging in England. It’s about as unEnglish as you can get. It’s also charmless, impotent and ugly. It’s a footnote in a satirical history, along with hula hoops and Liz Truss.

For four years in the mid-1970s I lived over the route of the Notting Hill Carnival. It was Portobello Road life writ large and loud, in glorious technicolour. Now it is the finest assertion of modern London, and rejection of the drooling prejudices of Farage’s Brown Shorts.
