Many people wrongly assume that the world famous Major Oak in Sherwood Forest got its name because it was the biggest and most dominant tree in the forest. The truth is that it was named after a Major Hayman Rooke, who, on retirement from the army, moved to the area . 1/3

Nottingham’s Robin Hood statue was commissioned by local businessman Philip Clay in 1949, because there was nothing for visitors to see about its world famous legendary outlaw hero.

Upon his death in 1806, as a mark of respect for the interest he had shown, the formerly known Cockpen Tree (so called because its hollow trunk had been used to rear and keep fighting cocks) was re-named “the Major’s Oak” in Rooke’s honour. 3/3.

Over the years, the statue became a target for souvenir hunters and there have been times when Robin looked particularly forlorn, with no arrow, no bowstring and sometimes only half a bow. In the 50s and 60s, replacement arrows were costing the City Council £55 a time! 1/2
