Hope this can be followed up with larger studies to test replication of vmPFC blunting, as well as the use of randomized designs to examine the potential benefit of behavioral or neuromodulation approaches targeting vmPFC and future thinking.

Results suggested the protocol was challenging but acceptable to participants, with relatively high ratings concerning the potential helpfulness in regards to treatment. Some suggestion of increased vmPFC activation from first to third neurofeedback session.

We also conducted a small feasibility and acceptability study using real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback as a potential technique for helping individuals with current STBs to enhance vmPFC activation.

Participants included individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD), with and without suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs; history of suicide attempts and current ideation). Those with STBs exhibited blunting of vMPFC across negative, neutral and positive EFT.

@HannahBergPsych @TimMcDermottPhD @ChristineChaPhD @edayballard @mpwpaulus We utilized a personalized episodic future thinking (EFT) task with negative, positive, and neutral conditions - which was sensitive to default mode network activation. vmPFC specifically activated more for positive than negative EFT.
