Pandemic preparedness in the US has been leveled a crippling blow with the cancellation of multiple #BARDA contracts to help develop mRNA vaccines. No other vaccine platform produces vaccine so quickly; without mRNA, Americans will have a long wait for pandemic vax.
statnews.com
Vaccine experts and people steeped in pandemic preparedness expressed horror at the news that RFK Jr. has shut the door in U.S. investment in mRNA vaccine research.

Being a scientist is still the best job in the world. The constant frustrations, all the crap that goes with trying to keep the lab alive and move things forward - it all resets and washes away in those occasional moments when we catch a glimpse of nature revealing something

Severe, long term sequelae in survivors despite treatment. Clear evidence to vaccinate high risk persons in endemic areas and stage treatments (even experimental ones). Early detection, vaccination, and early treatment saves lives.

Would be nice if folks published more of the arguments and impacts of defunding American science outside the paywalls of academic journals. Might actually reach the public and other funders that way

Sierra Leone is battling an mpox variant, G.1, that is rapidly spreading—25% hospitalized, thousands likely infected, cases doubling every two weeks, and now detected in the US & Europe. The country is responding. The world must join them. @TIME @christian_happi

Another Nipah case in Kerala with contacts also symptomatic. There are a number of effective drugs and vaccines in development that need to make it across the finish line. This is just another reminder why its important to continue to develop countermeasures against these agents

An organ recipient died from #rabies. The deceased donor wasn't recognized as a rabies case, suffering from non-traditional symptoms. In addition, 3 recipients of corneal tissue were exposed, but were treated with post-exposure prophylaxis. What a horrible situation.
