Gave him a new/better test and he knocked it out of the park. Perfect? No. But he showed a drive and potential that wasn't as clear before. He is now one of my animators. And has been doing an excellent job. Don't get discouraged when things don't seem to work out. Get motivated!

Game developers animate almost everything at 30fps, so you would be seeing all of the animation at a solid 30fps. Anything that’s 60fps you’re seeing interpolation being done by the engine. Occasionally we may export a select animation at 60fps for high detail but that’s rare.
At 30fps, your eyes and brain are getting half of the visual information every 33ms, compared to 60fps.
Half of the animations, half of the presentation in motion & half of the fluid response.
It's important and why the Xbox Series and PS5 are built this way.

Animation is all about illusion. In this shot I animated, they aren't falling very far in the Maya scene, but I had to give the feeling they were covering distance. So I used the giant to trick the sense of distance by having him looking up after establishing a relative position.

Great AAA games take years to develop. With pre-production phases often extending into multiple years as developers try to figure out the direction of their game. Every developer wants to show off their game. They really do. The only reason they don’t is it’s not ready yet.

There’s an understandable concern by some that a perceived lack of competition could degrade quality of releases. At the developer level, PlayStation studios don’t compete against Xbox or Nintendo studios. We are all driven by an internal desire to create the best work possible.

This was a brilliant moment. The designers conditioned the player to think the work bench was a safe place. Then completely broke that rule, causing one of the biggest jump scares. Put the player back on edge, increased anxiety, had you questioning learned mechanics.

I’ve applied at Naughty Dog 2 or 3 times in my career. And was turned down each time 🙂. So when I got the opportunity to work on their game I took it. I love The Last Of Us but I also wanted to show what I am capable of. Seeing my name in the credits is a small personal win.

I prefer playing at 60fps also. In regards to animation, the important distinction is when an engine interpolates it’s adding frames but it’s not adding detail, it’s not adding quality. It just appears smoother. But it sometimes can glitch the animation or change timing/spacing.
