An object lesson for #scicomm and #sciengage about how NOT to do film and media designed to engage — especially films designed to engage middle school students in #climate careers.

#AAASmtg Science of Storytelling “best practice” film clips were about a white male scientist going to an Asian country to do climate research. No local scientists engaged. A very colonial approach from #nationalgeographic.

Epic fail on the #AAASmtg strategic storytelling session (which is actually about film making) when the sound of the films wouldn’t work.

An overall observation about the scicomm offerings at #aaasmtg is that they are ALL about telling stories about research IMPACT. Not about sharing passion, wonder, excitement, awe. #scicomm #sciengage.

In particular am already weary of #aaasmtg sessions on #sciengage/#scicomm that are barely disguised adverts for various initiatives without any substance or metrics. Much cheerleading.

At this year’s #AAASmtg missing what used to be a rich discussion environment for science communication. It isn’t this year.
