The Earth's slowing down is slowing down! There will be no leap second at the end of December 2021 - there hasn't been one for years now.

The courageous ask what time is. So in this occasional series of “What is Time?” tweets, I offer some explanations I have come across.

Centenary of the Geomagnetic storm of May 13-15 1921, one of the largest on record. “If the May 1921 storm hit today…the disruption of GPS could significantly impact logistics and emergency services.” We will need fallback options for timing when it does.

as space-time. But that is as far as we conventionally go. Even the majority of physicists seem to be resigned to just three dimensions. If they were seriously expecting more, they might not have chosen their labels from the end of the alphabet.".

Lovely quote from @J_cartwrght in @newscientist on Oct 17, 2020: "In normal space, you only need three [dimensions] usually labelled x, y and z. True, time is sometimes referred to as the fourth dimension, and physics tells us that it is married to space in the union known. 👇.

infrastructure will fail in an unexpected way. It will at some point - there may be 1000 “once-a-millennium” risks you are exposed to. That’ll keep you busy. Apparently, Oliver considered running for Conservative leadership in 2005. How about the slogan of “Let Letwin Win!”?.

These aren't about trying to guess what could go wrong with your primary infrastructure and providing resilience. Every situation is different; many things can go wrong that can’t be guessed in advance. The fallback option is how you are going to cope assuming your primary (2/3).

I just finished the fantastic book “Apocalypse How?” by Oliver Letwin, as recommended to me by Dana Goward (@GPSBackup). It’s a great analysis on how easily our fragile technology networks can go wrong, and is an easy read. He highlights the concept of “fallback options”. (1/3)

Online betting is high stakes when the machines mess up, which they will do from time to time. As a betting company, unless you can prove exactly when things happened, this exposure is a serious liability. #TraceableTime #TTaaS.

Such is our ability to describe the quantum world. And such is life today, especially in the virtual computing world, increasingly in the cloud. If you can't trace the sequence of events, you have no grasp on what was ever real. You’re lost in fog. That’s why I started @Hoptroff.

The essay says many things that set my mind a-whirr, but best is: “A particle is not a permanent entity but an instantaneous event. It can have the illusion of permanence through a sequence of events.” (2/3).
